English at LIPA Primary School

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we use a combination of Letters and Sounds, Read Write Inc and Jolly Phonics to teach our daily Phonics sessions.

In Key Stage 1, we use a combination of Letters and Sounds and the School Improvement Liverpool KS1 plans to teach our daily Phonics and Spelling sessions.

Teachers provide daily speaking and listening activities that are well matched to children’s developing abilities and interests. These activities draw upon observations and assessments to plan for progression and to identify children who need additional support, for example to discriminate and produce the sounds of speech.

We run Intervention programmes with children in Years 1 and 2, before and during school time, to support those who may benefit from additional support.

Our reading scheme draws heavily on Oxford Reading Tree, Floppy's Phonics, Songbirds and selected real books by popular children's authors. Other schemes such as Story Sparks, In Fact and Bug Club books are also used to enhance the content and genre styles available for home readers and Guided Reading.
