LIPA Curriculum intent, implementation and impact


What are the key aims and values underpinning our curriculum?


  • Our curriculum will enable children to embed their learning with real life projects and events that offer children the opportunities to gain skills and knowledge.
  • A series of Project Managers underpin our curriculum and these were developed initially from the EYFS Characteristics of Effective Learning.  The Project managers and their attributes are identified below


- Captain Resilience- loves to have a go and never gives up.

- Captain Explorer- is curious and loves to use the senses to find out new things.

- Captain Performer- is confident and enjoys being the first to try something new.

- Captain in Charge- helps other people and is good at organising things to do.

- Captain Problem Buster- good at trying new things and loves to find new ways to find the answer.

- Captain Creative- thinks about things in different ways and loves to try different ideas.


Are there any elements of our curriculum you feel are particularly important to develop for our children?


  • LIPA Values – encompasses PSHE, SMSC and British Values curriculum to support our children to become good citizens.
  • Project Based Learning – we provide children with real life, open ended projects in which they can plan, prepare and rehearse for an end of project outcome to be shared with others. Our projects are varied according to each year group and can often change direction due to the interests of the children.
  • Music and the Performing Arts - Our music team is made up of LIPA graduates. All children benefit from their skills and expertise through whole class, small group and 1:1 sessions.

What principles underpin the delivery of our curriculum?

What enrichment do we provide for our children as part of the curriculum?


We aim to enrich the curriculum in real and meaningful ways which actively support project based learning. Enrichment includes partnerships with external stakeholders such as:

  • TATE gallery
  • Capoeira
  • LIPA and LIPA sixth form
  • Edge Hill University
  • Hesketh with Becconsall C.E. Primary School (Lancashire Partner School)
  • City of Liverpool College
  • Movema
  • Little Sports
  • Unity Theatre
  • Anglican Cathedral
  • Individual projects are planned so that teachers carefully consider how additional enrichment opportunities can support and extend learning.

We make links with other schools and agencies such as:

  • Five Ways Learning Network
  • Waterfront Teaching Alliance
  • OWLS (School direct)

We also offer a range of After School provision which extends the curriculum, the clubs change each half term and range from:

- Signing Showstoppers

- Yoga

- Photography

- Multiskills

- Irish dance

- Creative club


All children are offered after school music provision and children who are in receipt of Pupil Premium funding are offered this at no cost. These children are also entitled to access 1:1 piano or guitar lessons during the school day.


We develop the skills and talents of our children through a School Council, Reading Ambassadors and an Eco-Council means we are providing opportunities for our children to voice their thoughts and opinions and have an impact on the future of our school.


How do we ensure that the curriculum is broad and balanced?


  • Long term plans identify names of projects and relevant logistical requirements.
  • Teachers carefully plan in national curriculum/ EYFS requirements to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Subject leaders ensure the coverage and consistency of their subject within the projects. We provide subject leader weeks throughout the year for monitoring and evaluation of individual subjects.
  • Assistant head teacher has an overview of projects and individual subjects and works with subject leads to provide a standardised approach across projects.
  • Phase Meetings- we have fortnightly meetings, in which the phase leads plan bespoke training to the needs of the team and develop consistency across the phases.
  • Staff training- We have fortnightly staff training sessions to provide continued professional development for everybody and for opportunities for staff to work together to develop the creativity in our curriculum.
  • PPA time is spent with year group teachers to develop their own creative curriculum. Where appropriate support is provided by phase leads.
  • Accessing a range of external support to develop the wider curriculum.
