At LIPA Primary School we are committed to ensuring that children have a positive and meaningful experience of Mathematics. We offer a curriculum that secures essential knowledge and skills, whilst giving the children many opportunities to use and apply their mathematical skills across the curriculum, through real life problem solving and mathematical investigations.
In the Early Year Foundation Stage (EYFS) children follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum for Mathematics, as they make progress towards and where appropriate beyond the Early Learning Goals. Areas covered are: Number and Shape, Space and Measures. Children are given the opportunity to develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern and shape and space through a combination of short, formal teaching as well as a range of planned structured play situations, where there is plenty of scope for exploration.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, we use a combination of the School Improvement Liverpool plans and White Rose Hub schemes of work to teach our daily Maths lessons ensuring children receive a high-quality Mathematics education. Teachers provide daily mental Maths, basic skills and problem solving activities that are well matched to children’s developing abilities and learning needs.
We are currently working towards gaining the Liverpool Counts Quality Mark, which is about raising the profile of Maths in school and promoting positive attitudes. Please visit our LCQM page to learn about this exciting journey!
