Learning through the creative and performing arts
Intent
The intention of the Spanish curriculum at LIPA Primary School is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages and cultures, fostering their curiosity, deepening their understanding of the world. With clear, sequential and consistent schemes of progression, children progressively acquire, use and apply knowledge across a substantial range of topics, developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Our Spanish curriculum offers opportunities for children to not only learn skills but also make cross-curricular links through its focus on a large variety of topics, project based learning, and close links with LIPA High School.
At LIPA Primary School, we are committed to ensuring our MFL teaching provides a strong foundation for learning further languages, striving to embed an appropriate balance of skills in spoken and written language ready for further foreign language teaching at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
Our Spanish curriculum aims to ensure all children:
Implementation
Our Spanish curriculum and links with LIPA High School are designed to develop not only our children’s language skills, but their love for learning an additional language. Our curriculum has been designed to progressively develop language skills across Key Stage Two acquiring and enhancing knowledge, skills and understanding, grammar, vocabulary, and phonics. Children will apply their learning across a range of topics, developing their speaking, writing and listening skills through role-plays, conversations, games, presentations, as well as reading and writing across varying genres.
Lessons are sequenced ensuring prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of phonics, grammatical concepts and vocabulary are built into each lesson. Lessons ensure learning is fully embedded, allowing children to build on prior knowledge alongside the introduction of new skills. Throughout Key Stage 2, children receive formal weekly lessons. Each academic year core topics and phonetical knowledge are recapped, in order to solidify pronunciation skills and enable a deeper and clearer understanding of the content to be taught over the coming units.
Lessons across Key Stage 2 support the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking:
We currently use Languagenut to support our teaching of Spanish.
Children’s knowledge, understanding and retention of Spanish is assessed through continuous teacher assessment, as well as knowledge checks periodically throughout the academic year.
Impact
Our MFL curriculum will ensure that all children develop language learning skills set out by the National Curriculum, as well as an interest in learning other languages and cultures. Children will develop their knowledge of different languages, including the range of home languages spoken by the families within and communities around our school. Varied learning experiences, including cultural celebration days will help to provide context for language learning as well as an appreciation and understanding of different cultures.
